SSD vs HDD: a completely different recovery process

SSDs have no mechanical parts. Their faults and recovery methods are fundamentally different.

How an SSD works

Unlike a mechanical hard drive, an SSD stores data on NAND Flash memory chips. A controller manages writing, reading and cell wear through complex firmware.

When an SSD fails, the problem is generally:

  • The controller : the SSD's "brain" is faulty
  • The firmware : the internal software is corrupted
  • The NAND chips : premature wear or corruption
  • The translation table : the mapping between logical and physical addresses has been lost

Why it is more complex

On an HDD, data is written sequentially on platters. On an SSD, it is fragmented and encrypted by the controller and spread across several chips.

Recovering the data often requires:

  • Desoldering the NAND chips from the circuit board
  • Reading them individually with a specialist reader
  • Reconstructing the data order using a proprietary algorithm
  • Decrypting the data if the SSD uses hardware encryption

This is why consumer recovery software is completely ineffective on an SSD with a hardware fault.

Flash devices we handle

SATA & NVMe SSDs

Samsung, Crucial, WD, Kingston, Intel and others. All formats: 2.5-inch, M.2, mSATA, PCIe. Controller faults, firmware faults and NAND wear.

USB drives

SanDisk, Kingston, Verbatim and others. Drive not recognised, formatting requested or missing data. Direct extraction from NAND chips.

SD & microSD cards

Lost photos and videos? A corrupted or unreadable card, or one reporting errors. Recovery of photos, videos and documents.

External SSDs

Samsung T5/T7, WD My Passport SSD, SanDisk Extreme and others. The same NAND technology and recovery methods.

Common SSD faults

SSD not detected

The BIOS or operating system no longer sees the SSD. This is often related to the controller or firmware. The SSD may be in brick mode.

SSD not detected: complete guide

Read-only SSD

The SSD enters a protective mode when its NAND cells reach their wear limit. Data can be read but no longer changed.

Format request

Windows asks you to format the drive? The partition table is corrupted, but the underlying data is intact. Do not format it.

Warning: TRIM destroys your data

Unlike an HDD, an SSD uses the TRIM command, which automatically erases data blocks marked as deleted. This means:

  • Files deleted from an SSD are much harder to recover than files deleted from an HDD
  • The longer you wait after deletion, the lower the chances of recovery
  • Acting quickly is even more critical than with a conventional hard drive

If your SSD has a problem, switch it off immediately and contact us.

Frequently asked questions - SSD & Flash

Can data be recovered from an SSD?

Yes, in most cases. Recovery differs from an HDD: specialist tools are needed to access the NAND chips and reconstruct the data. It is more complex, but our equipment makes it possible.

My USB drive asks to be formatted. What should I do?

Do not format it. This message means the partition table is corrupted, but your data is probably intact. Describe the symptoms online for an initial assessment before shipping anything.

My SD card is unreadable. Are my photos lost?

Probably not. SD cards use Flash memory like SSDs. Our tools can extract data directly from the chips, even if the camera or computer no longer recognises the card.

Is the price the same as for a hard drive?

Yes. The price depends on the complexity of the work, rather than just the device type. The initial online assessment is within one hour; the recovery balance is payable only if recovery succeeds. View our prices

Faulty SSD? Corrupted USB drive?

Initial online assessment within one hour. New cases: O, A, B and B+ have €30 initial postage and no investigation fee; C and C+ have €130 initial investigation. The initial amount is deducted once from the recovery price on success and retained on failure; no recovery balance is due on failure.
